"The Gift of Peace" by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin

I just read "The Gift of Peace" by Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, which is an older book, but it is probably the best one I've ever read concerning Catholicism so far. The Cardinal wrote it as he was dying from cancer, and he finished it only 13 days before his death. It is seperated into three major parts: his false accusation of abusing a man, his cancer, and the return of his cancer. The fourth and final part is very short and called "Befriending Death". In an extremely poignant manner, Cardinal Bernardin reflects on the coming winter. He says that it is a season of dying, and he admits that he will not see the rebirth in the spring before his own death. Rather, he says he hopes he will be part of a new Creation - a new spring in Heaven with Christ.

In it Cardinal Bernardin wrote so fervently of his love and true gift of peace given to Him by the Lord. I don't remember many things from 1996, but the one memory in my mind is of the funeral of Cardinal Bernardin; I may not agree with all of his ideas but he was a great person. I give this book a 10.0/10 I didn't think a book could be perfect, but this one was written so very well and with such love I couldn't put it down. It is so easy to read. I have never read a book from cover to cover in one sitting before.

Anyone read it? I heard it's on sale for 1 cent at even!

Peace is a gift indeed, and I'm sure this Cardinal did his best to show that in his book. I'll try to pick it up--eventually.
