He was evangelizing the Frisians (a rather rough crowd) and sought to make his point to chopping down a sacred oak; after which Boniface was duly chopped up himself by a rather unidignified mob. <BR/>Interestingly most 'sacred oaks' later were kept in place by the Church and became focal points for all kinds of miracle stories.
