It's Friday: A Day of Penance

Just a reminder to all Catholics that Friday is still a day of penance. We are no longer required to abstain from meat outside of Lent but here are some ways I found to make Friday a day of penance.

  1. Abstain from meat anyway if you normally do not
  2. Send money today to a non-for-profit organization
  3. Volunteer at a shelter or soup kitchen today. Help someone in need
  4. Pray for an extra hour in honor and praise for God's mercy was shown on the Cross on a Friday.
  5. Make us of your talents where by blogging, talking, or by example for Christ's mercy on the Cross.

Above all contemplate this line, which echoed in my head this afternoon: "It's Your Love that consumes me." Remember Christ's sacrifice. Say a prayer at 3 o'clock especially; pray the stations of the Cross. Remember that's what it's about...remember Christ.

Thanks for the reminder! I have the hardest time remembering to do something penetential on Fridays. I wish we would hear the reminder from the pulpit occasionally.
