Why is it that many Catholics don't read the Bible? There are people in my parish who even seem to fear the Word of God...I love the Word of God alongside the Traditions of our Catholic Faith.

I dont understand this aspect among my fellow Catholics...

Great piece of Scripture.

Peace to ALL

Marie

I completely agree with you, Marie. The word is God and tradition make up our great faith. It is the Word of God that is refreshing and loving. I personally love listening to the readings over the Internet each morning.

They are encouraged to now, Marie, but it wasn't always that way. The Church was afraid and often under attack from various other sources, and the hierarchy felt it best and safest that those they deemed the uneducated, misguided laypeople should not try to read the Bible, but should listen to their priest's interpretation on Sundays. I believe, for the most past, their intent was pastoral; they didn't want their sheep to stray because they misunderstood something or found a passage difficult. That all began to change in the late 1800s when the magisterium realized that the people had a hunger to read the Bible for themselves, and at least three encyclicals came out between 1870-1960 that encourage responsible Biblical reading. Vatican II opened up the historical-critical method of scholarship to Catholic exegetes even more.
