Last night, President George W. Bush nominated John Roberts, a conservative justice. At one point in the past, Justice Roberts said Roe vs. Wade should be overturned, but he has once called it "the settled law of the land". I am not rejecting or supporting him yet until questions are asked of him, and I will write more later as I feel his position on abortion and other issues becomes more clear.

The context of the two comments are important. In the one where he said Rowe should be overturned he was acting in the capacity of an advocate for his client-the first Bush administration. What an attorney says representing his client is not an accurate barometer of the attorney's personal opinion on the matter. The other statement seems closer to the mark on his personal philosophy. My opinion is that he will be confirmed, despite the caterwailing of groups like Moveon.org and NOW, quite easily. And it will be as if Sandra Day O'Connor had never left.

Would he be against abortion though and probably support parental consent laws? Would he be against partial birth abortion?
