Are these really "Catholic" Colleges?

I just read an alarming piece of information concerning supposed Catholic colleges. The Cardinal Newmann Society has conducted reviews of websites by Catholic colleges and found some to include links and referrals to places like Planned Parenthood, the National Organization for Women, and NARAL, which all support the murder of the unborn.

"Some of the violators include Boston College, DePaul University, Dominican University of California, Georgetown University, Loyola University of Chicago, Loyola University of New Orleans, Our Lady of the Lake University, Santa Clara University, Seton Hall University and the University of Detroit Mercy." Furthermore, "The College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota, posts online information encouraging students to use abortifacient devices. "

Thankfully, the Cardinal Newmann Society has faxed these universities asking them to immediately remove these sinful and alarming links. How deceitful that Catholic universities would post links to places that murder unborn children. I think we desperately need to include Catholic educators and schools to our prayers immediately.

More information on this can be found at The Cardinal Newmann Website.

Moneybags, I recommend that you contact the Cardinal Newman Society [CNS] by e-mail or phone and get much more info, to share with your readers.

You seem surprised about what you have just learned and posted, but I have known for twenty years what the CNS people will tell you -- that fewer than 20 of the United States' 240 or so supposedly "Catholic" colleges and universities still qualify as genuinely Catholic. The others have gone down the drain, and they either hate or ignore the CNS.

Moneybags,

These colleges seem to reflect the values of some "Catholics" in our society -- they are Catholic in name only.

I think it is a good thing that you report on this because MANY people are unaware of this. Catholic colleges have changed dramatically over the years and few people are aware of this. Until I started watching EWTN in 1993, I had no idea that things like this were happening.

I am a cradle Catholic and an avid reader, but it's only been recently that the Catholic blogs, webistes and the media have brought this information to light.

Thank you!

God bless you,
Jean

Thank you, Jean. I'm also glad that there are other Catholic bloggers like us. I can report on this as much as I want, but if no one see it, it won't make a difference.

Anonymous, I have checked their website (I posted a link in my post) and I see the links to the abortion supporting websites. I wouldn't be suprised if only 20 colleges were truly Catholic, but I will support only true Catholic colleges like those so-called 20.

I wasn't aware of Seton Hall being apart of this. :(
Isn't that the same Seton Hall that so many homeschooling families put their trust in?
And I ashamed of Univ. of Detroit Mercy, since it is within miles form where I live.

I am so thankful now that my parents "made" me go to Franciscan University. I tell you, it's a truly Catholic place, and I can't imagine having gone to another school that would have misled me into adulthood.
Hopefully we can see our schools change. I am praying for it. I need a good place for my son to go to in 16 years!! lol.

Dear Sharon,
I too am glad that your parents "made" you go to Franciscan University of Steubenville (one of the fewer than twenty truly Catholic colleges in the U.S.).

The answer to your question is, "NO!". Seton Hall University (in New Jersey) is completely unrelated to the Seton home-schooling program. The university's site is http://www.shu.edu/ -- while the home-schooling site is http://www.setonhome.org/

At the university's site, you'll find a page promoting the pro-homosexual "Lambda Law Forum" (http://law.shu.edu/orgs/lambda/index.htm), which does not promote chastity. By contrast, the home-schooling site is 100% orthodox Catholic.

Thanks for clarifying that, anonymous. :)
I feel better having that info.
And deep down, I know Franciscan U. was worth the loans to go there- I just forget that each month when we have to pay the bills! :(

It is absolutely no surprise that the College of St.Catherine supports students use of abortifacients. They wanted and may have had Gloria Steinham as speaker at their graduation one year! They are absolutely non-catholic and should be stripped of the name.

Great post. My parents have been looking at Catholic colleges in PA for me to go to for the past year. I am not sure why they want me to go to a Catholic college when I go to public high school. Either way, I don't mind. We are very religious people. Thanks so much for sharing.
