Assumption Novena: Final Day

O Blessed Mother Assumed into Heaven, after years of heroic martyrdom on earth, we rejoice that you have at last been taken to the throne prepared for you in Heaven by the Holy Trinity. Lift our hearts with you in the glory of your Assumption above the dreadful touch of sin and impurity. Teach us how small earth becomes when viewed from heaven. Make us realize that death is the triumphant gate through which we shall pass to your Son and that someday our bodies shall rejoin our souls in the unending bliss of heaven. From this earth, over which we tread as pilgrims, we look to you for help. In honor of your Assumption into Heaven we ask for this favor (mention your request). When our hour of death has come, lead us safely to the presence of Jesus to enjoy the vision of God for all eternity together with you. Pray for us O Queen Assumed into Heaven, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

on Mary:

As a protestant, I am not familiar witih many of the Roman Catholic Marian Doctrines. Is it the belief of the Catholic church that she was a product of an immaculate conception (like the birth of Christ as articulated in the NT)? If so, how far back does this (immaculate conecption) go? Was her mother too?

EJ,

The Catholic Church has five beliefs about Mary. Only the first 4 are dogmas, though, so they are the ones that need to be believed by all Catholics.

1) That she is the Mother of God;
2) That she was Ever-Virgin;
3) That she was immaculately conceived (remained sinless too);
4) That she was assumed into Heaven and crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth;
5) That she is Mediatrix of all Graces, Co-Redemptrix and Advocate for the People of God.

We believe that Mary was immaculately conceived and remained free from sin. By God's saving action in her, Our Savior was able to be born from her. Mary's Mother, St. Anne, was not sinless. For more information on the Immaculate Conception, click on it under #3.

Thank you, EJ for asking those questions in a very respectful manner.

Have a blessed Assumption Day !

"O Immaculate Virgin, Mother of God and Mother of men, we believe with all the fervour of our faith in your triumphal Assumption, both body and soul, into heaven, where you are acclaimed as Queen by all the choirs of angels and all the legions of the saints. And we unite with them to praise and bless the Lord who has exalted you above all other pure creatures, and to offer you the tribute of our devotion and our love.

"We know that your gaze, which on earth, watched over the humble and suffering humanity of Jesus, in heaven is filled with the vision of that humanity glorified, and with the vision of the uncreated Wisdom; the joy of your soul in the direct contemplation of the adorable Trinity causes your heart to throb with overwhelming tenderness. We, poor sinners, weighed down by a body which hinders the flight of the soul, beg you to purify our hearts, so that while we remain here below, we may learn to love God and God alone in the beauty of His creatures.

"We trust that your merciful eyes may deign to look down upon our miseries and our sorrows, upon our struggles and our weaknesses; that your countenance may smile upon our joys and our victories; that you may hear the voice of Jesus saying to you of each one of us, as He once said to you of His beloved disciple: 'Behold thy son.' And we, who call upon you as our Mother, take you, like John, as the guide, strength and consolation of our mortal life.

"And from this earth over which we tread as pilgrims, comforted by our faith in the future resurrection, we look to you, our life, our sweetness and our hope. Draw us onward by the gentleness of your voice, so that one day, after our exile, you may show us Jesus, the Blessed Fruit of your womb, O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary."

(Pope Pius XII)
