Bolivia's President Evo Morales has suggested replacing the feast of Corpus Christi, which is a national holiday in that country, with a day officially dedicated to the sun god, Vatican Radio reports.
The Bolivian president, a Socialist who won national elections in December 2005, claims to be the first descendant of native Bolivians to lead the country since the days of the Spanish conquest. Morales identifies himself with his Indian ancestors, and says that he is a sun-worshipper.
Church leaders in Bolivia argue that Morales can make only a weak claim to historical precedents for a national holiday. Bishop Krzysztof Bialasik of Oruro reported: “Bolivians from the eastern part of the country told me that historically, there has never been observance of a day dedicated to the sun god.”
Apparently the President of Bolivia is a pagan who worships the "sun god" and wishes to bring Bolivia to formally participate in the false worship. How truly sad...

At the risk of being non ecumenical, he is basically worshipping what is 70% hydrogen in the plasma state along with 2% metals and 28% helium. One wonders if he waxes pious when in the prescence of large commercial baloons. Frankly I think he is taking a cue from Venezuela and pitting his country against all outsiders thru a non real issue and thus garnering future votes for himself by way of alienation.
We celebrate Halloween which originaited from the pagan Samhain and we remember Jesus's birth on Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, an ancient Roman holiday, when Jesus was more likely born in the spring (that's when Shepherds watch their sheep at night).
It's just a holiday and not that big of a deal, I think.
Anon,
Did you read the article?
He is suggesting REPLACING CORPUS CHRISTI with a day to worship the sun.
And yes, the Roman Catholic Church, in order to dissuade pagans from their practices, chose to replace a holiday worshiping a false god (10/31) with All Hallow's Eve, leading to our All Saints Day. And they chose to honor the birth of Christ on 12/25 to dissuade yet more pagan practices. (These little factoids are much debated by modern scholars, however, I don't see anything wrong or shameful about them, and could just as easily believe the legends about how the dates were chosen as anything else.)
This hardly compares to replacing the Feast Day of Corpus Christi with a day to worship a yellow dwarf star. (Of whom I am quite fond, incidentally.)
He is suggesting that his entire country break the first commandment.
I know he's all about the sun, but that sounds like lunacy to me.
