I just learned that Gov. Pataki of New York, an abortion supporter, plans on vetoing a bill that would make emergency contraception available over the counter. Although he is a Catholic, he plans to veto it because the bill does not have age restrictions for minors. This is definitely a good step in spreading a pro-life agenda, but I only wish that he would stop supporting abortion rights.
I have also learned that Gov. Romney of Massachusetts has vetoed the same bill. Does anyone know of the faith of this bill in any other states?

As a New Yorker, I'm happy about Pataki's decision (if not his reason).
Of course, this might be an attempt to appease the pro-lifers because he plans to run for president.
I also wonder if the same reason is at work in Sen. Frist's switch on embryonic stem cells.
I am also happy with his decision, but I don't think I would vote for him for President if he still supports abortion.
My favorite for President is either Sen. Brownback of Kansas or Sen. Santorum of Penn.
I would be more impressed if he pushed more for parental notification and restricted access to abortion for minors. Lee strong is right on the money about his motivations also. The conventional wisdom is that Pataki cannot gain enough support from the national Republican Party for a serious run at the Presidency. But I wouldn't count on that given the recent cracks in the prolife armor of some Republicans. But even if that is true, switching parties would not be such a stretch for Pataki who hads for the most part morphed into a Republican in name only.

Gov. Romney is the governor of Massachusetts. The legislature will probably override his veto, unfortunatley. But Romney made a good statement about the value of life.
Thank you for that correction. And, I also feel it is unforunate. I certainly hope they don't override the veto.
