Don't Support "Save Lids to Save Lives"

The program "Save Lids to Save lives" on Yoplait Yogurt containers should not be supported. The money donated goes to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and I was going to send some lids away because for every lid $0.10 goes to the foundation. However, I did some research and discovered this Foundation is a supporter of abortion.

"The Komen Foundation took in $153 million in 2003, and much of it probably went to finance good causes. But in 2003 the foundation also donated $475,000 to Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider" (Source: Toronoto Free Press).

Update: According to LifeNews in December 2006, the Susan G. Komen foundation gave more donations to Planned Parenthood.

As Catholics and Christians or even people of other faiths that value life from God, we must not support abortion in any way. Abortion, no matter what way you look at it, ends with death - death not in accordance with God's time but with our own. Abortion should be considered murder, and I can not send away anything to any foundation financing, even in part, such a horrible cause.

January 2012 Update: The National Office (not affiliates) have at least temporarily suspended donations to Planned Parenthood.

That's a fantastic bit of detective work, Moneybags! Well done!

Ironic isn't it, supporting lives to kill lives...

God Bless.

Well said moneybags.
I also do not support nor donate to UNICEF in that while they provide for the dispossessed and poor in most contries it also supports abortion.
I cannot understand the hypocrisy here?? Keep 'some' children alive but kill billions more hmmm!!
Amen to what you said Moneybags:)

Peace of Christ to you:).

Well, from what I've been able to find out about this is that the money did not go to support abortions, but to help Planned Parenthoods Mammogram Education Program which is something the article failed to mention.

Unfortunantly the author of the article you reference made a huge leap in judgement and thus have horribly mislead their readers. Planned Parenthood supplies abortions so any money they recieve must be used for that purpose right?

I would witdraw this article until I could confirm whether or not money being donated by the Susan B. Komen foundation to Planned Parenthood was being used to fund abortions or abortion related works, and not earmarked for unrelated projects by a company that just happens to also provide abortions.

God Bless

The problem is that every one of your articles is from Planned Parenthood so of course they will not say they are performing abortions with that money. Any work going to planned parenthood could be sent to abortions so best not to contribute to anything that funds planned parenthood at all.

I've been trying to find whether there is a webpage somewhere that has done this sort of research--list charities that ought not be supported due to their policies and such. Do you know of one? Thanks.

Unfortunately the UNBORN have NO voice that means WE are their voice!
I will continue to SPEAK out against any 'charity' that helps women to have abortions!
For instance in many poor countries UNICEF enables the Mothers to have ultra sounds NOT because of the welfare of the baby but in order to see if it is male or female. Many women who find they are having female babies then ABORT them in that they do NOT have to supply a dowry for their male child upon reaching the age of marriage!
No one is going to SHUT me up on the EVIL that is ABORTION!

Peace of Christ to ALL

Yes, it could be used to fund abortions, but that does not mean that it was definitely used to fund abortions. The truth is you don't know for certain.

The only true fact here is that all the facts are not here. The only way to know for certain is to contact Planned Parenthood and request a copy of the financial statements showing how the Susan G. Komen contribution was distributed through the organization. Without those statements, both the article and this blog are little more than idle gossip and could be false witness against your neighbor.

I have been pouring over the published financial records from the Susan G. Komen foundation and there are no contributions shown to any of the Planned Parenthood affiliates in the 2002 or 2003 fiscal years.

In fact, the records show that the last contributions made to Planned Parenthood was a research grant issued to Planned Parenthood Association of Cameron and Willacy Counties INC. of Texas in the 2000 fiscal year and again in the 1997 fiscal year.

Marie>> No one is trying to shut you up, we are merely debating the facts, not trying to suppress your opinions.

The only thing that is sad really, is that some of these women were raped. I am sure you would say something along the lines, that they asked for it. I don't think it is your right to force a woman to give birth after being raped. It is okay to voice your opinion of course=). Just try and put yourselves in their shoes and understand how scared and confused they may be. Also, if you are so against "the save lids to save lives", why don't you go ahead and make your own organization. Other than that...honestly people can't see why you're complaining=(

Many Catholics do understand why I wrote this post - because in good conscience, a Catholic (any Christian really) cannot support an organization that funds abortion in anyway. I ask you and all others to contribute to other pro-life organizations that are fighting against breast cancer.

I just want to tell all that what the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure does for everyone with breast cancer out weights anything you have said, you have to look at the greater good of a
company, because if you look close enough at anything you will find a skeleton in the closet.

I would give to another charity that supports early detection of breast cancer for poor women, but I cannot seem to find one. If I want to support early breast cancer detection, what organization should I give money to?

Julee, unfortunately I do not know of an organization that supports "early breast cancer detection". I suggest you Google "early breast cancer detection". But above all, make sure that the company does not support abortion because many companies that are for the prevention of breast cancer ironically send significant donations to Planned Parenthood.

You may wish to contact some of these organizations as they may know good organizations that support early breast cancer detection.

I recently seen a commercial on breast cancer research, and their t-shirts they were sporting said, "everyone deserves a lifetime." That's pretty odd to put that saying on the back of a shirt since they support murdering our babies. Maybe they should of put, "we save breasts and murder children!."

The Susan B. Komen Foundation supports Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood supports/provides Abortion. Abortion is wrong. Those who say that the Foubdation is merely donating money to P.P. to help early detection may be correct, but it is a "cop-out" and it brings scandal to give them a pass since the ends obviously do not justify the means; abortions contribute to breast cancer. (Therefore P.P. is guilty by association.)
Two possible solutions: 1) Research other organizations that help in early detection and are in union with Church teachings. 2) Write the Susan B. Komen foundation, provide them with the correct information on the truth of Planned Parenthood, abortion, breast cancer, etc... The second would be a challenge since many look to P.P. as a premier feminist organization, which is why they get as much funding as they do. However, if successful, they would find that suitable organization.
God bless
